Message from Our Superintendent
On Monday, March 16, 2020, Governor Jay Inslee ordered the closure of all schools in King, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On that day, we realized we were facing an unprecedented public health crisis. However, none of us could have possibly imagined just how impactful this pandemic would be for all of us.
We have now experienced more than a full year of school building closures, with limited in-person services for our students and staff, and we have shifted our entire teaching and learning system to remote learning. As a result, I want to take this opportunity to share a sincere “thank you.”
Thank you to KSD students for persisting and adjusting, and for doing your best to stay connected in order to learn something new each day. As a lifelong learner, I realize not every lesson can be learned easily or independently. I also recognize our learning within the total school experience often occurs in the moments beyond the lesson plans.
Because of this reality, again, I thank each of our KSD families for your patience, collaboration, and cooperation. I know this pandemic has created inequitable hardship. As a parent, I also know remote learning has put you in a position you never planned to be in and certainly not for this long.
Thank you to our KSD community for answering the call to support students and families with meal distribution and donations to meet their needs all year. I have also not forgotten the closure of our schools came shortly after you approved the renewal of our Educational Program & Operations (EP&O) Levy. When approved by voters, our levies and bonds provide funds that stay in our district and help our students. And I look forward to our shared celebration of the opening of two new schools this fall, which are being constructed by voter-approved dollars.
Finally, I want to thank each and every member of Team KSD for your service, dedication, and commitment to our mission, vision, and core values this past year. As an educator, I know this has been the most challenging year for all educators, including those who teach, and those who support those who teach. I also take comfort in knowing that as learners ourselves, we will carry forward the lessons we have learned during this pandemic and use them to make us better educators for the balance of our careers.
I am so proud of the accomplishments of our students, staff, and community. Thank you for continuing to support our mission of successfully preparing all students for their futures. On behalf of our School Board, and Team KSD, I want to express my deep appreciation for our KSD community’s patience, particularly, as we have worked through the daily challenges the coronavirus has presented us. We look forward to being able to safely welcome everyone back into our schools.
In partnership and service,
Dr. Calvin J. Watts
