Message from the Superintendent
Message from the Superintendent
As the end of the school year approaches and I reflect on our progress this year, I have been fortunate to meet and talk with many of our extraordinary, talented staff during school visits and central office walks. I am humbled by our students and their innovative ideas and creative processes they bring to their education. It has been a joy to see the learning happening at schools and the work being accomplished at the district administrative office to support learning. We are learning what our system needs to successfully support our large, diverse school district to ensure student growth and achievement.
Throughout the 2022-23 school year, I have continued to evaluate the efficacy of our current systems of support. I will be implementing a reorganization at the district administrative offices which includes adjusting the capacity of current and future leadership roles and teams to more effectively meet the needs of our students, and to better align support systems with the revised strategic plan.
First, as we focus on our priority of teaching and learning, I welcome our new Associate Superintendent Dr. Rebekah Kim. Her first day is June 1 and we are excited to welcome her to Team KSD. This community will now encompass the following teams:
- Curriculum and Instruction
- Digital Learning
- Elementary Teaching and Learning
- Office of Learning Improvement
- Professional Development Operations
- Secondary Teaching and Learning
- Teacher and Leadership Development
Second, I created the position of Deputy Superintendent and promoted Dr. Wade Barringer to this role. The purpose of this position is to assist the Superintendent by providing leadership for district and school operations along with ensuring systems coherence to support the best possible educational outcome for every student. The following communities and teams will report to the Deputy Superintendent:
- Athletics and Activities
- Capital Projects
- Facilities
- Finance
- Environmental Services
- Human Resources
- Maintenance
- Operations
- Nutrition Services
- Safety Services
- Technology Operations
- Technology Support Services

- Warehouse and Distribution Services
Third, I am retitling Schools and Academic Supports to Learning Supports under the direction of Associate Superintendent Randy Heath. I am creating a position to support program evaluation and the implementation of our strategic plan. This position of Senior Executive Director of Accountability and Strategy will be filled by Mr. Spencer Pan. I am also renaming several of the teams within this community:
- Advanced Learning (formerly Highly Capable Education)
- Assessment
- Career and Technical Education
- Title I and LAP Programs
- Community Partnerships (formerly Community Schools)
- Coordinated Health Services (formerly Health Services)
- Data Services and Support
- Inclusive Education
- Multilingual Education
- Performance Outcomes & Data (formerly Organizational Effectiveness)
- Research and Evaluation
- Strategic Initiatives & Program Operations
- Student and Family Support Services
- Student Success
- Student Supports
Fourth, the Superintendent's Community will consist of the following:
- Assistant to the Superintendent
- Board and Superintendent Governance
- Equity and Strategic Engagement
- General Counsel
- Office of Communications and Public Affairs
- Policy & Procedures
- Printing Services
I encourage you to join us as we work towards coherence - all to better support our students. Continuous improvement demands flexibility and reflection based on student needs. While systems change is not always an easy process, I believe these, and future adjustments, will increase our capacity to help our students be successful.
This realignment will become official on July 1, 2023. We are looking forward to starting the new school year strong as we continue our work together in successfully preparing all students for their futures.
In gratitude,
