The Kent School Board of Directors passed a resolution for a Replacement Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) levy on the February 8, 2022, ballot.

Our levy pays for critical needs not yet fully funded by the state. Voters will have an opportunity to maintain current funding for programs such as safety and security, bullying prevention, career, and technical education, professional development for teachers, and essential staff like classroom teachers, nurses, mental health counselors, and safety staff not fully funded by the state. This levy would replace the levy approved by voters in 2020 that expires in December 2022.

In consideration of both the needs of Kent School District students and our citizen taxpayers, what is proposed is a two-year “flat amount” levy. This means that there would be no increase in the total amount collected during calendar years 2023 and 2024.  It is also expected that tax levy rate paid by Kent citizens will decrease as property values continue to rise. Passage or failure of the levy proposition will have financial impacts on the District of up to $145.25M

Interim Superintendent Mr. Israel Vela said at the board meeting that he is confident that this amount of funding would allow the District to maintain its current programs while remaining fiscally responsible and sensitive to the overall tax rate.   

“When voters invest in our students and schools, they are investing in our community,” said Mr. Vela, “All students should be given the same opportunities regardless of their abilities, backgrounds, or family income. This continued funding will ensure all students in Kent School District have the same opportunities to learn, grow and succeed.”
