Welcome to the New School Year!
I am so proud to welcome the Lake Youngs Community back to school, and to active learning. I know that this summer has been filled with anxiety and concern about what the new school year would bring. While we believe students learn best in an active, in-person environment with their friends, and in close proximity to a skilled and caring teacher, until the COVID 19 crisis passes our highest priority must be keeping students, staff, and families healthy and safe. Thus, we are celebrating our first day of school online!
Our online learning is a mix of live instruction from teachers and specialists, and independent work assigned to students to be completed following the “live” portion of the day. The extraordinary situation presented by distance learning and the COVID crisis make it especially important for our teachers to support the emotional and social well-being of our students. We will do everything we can to support students who are feeling isolated, as well as those who are feeling frightened and confused by matters far outside their control. We need to pay special attention to our students who are most affected by the impacts of racism and inequity, which have been spotlighted by the Black Live Matter movement.
Despite the difficulties of COVID restrictions, the 2020-21 school year provides us with a wonderful opportunity for reflection, for skill building (especially with technology!), and for providing mutual support to those around us. When this year is done and past, we may look at this time as a turning point toward a more meaningful and productive system for education, and toward a deepening of our commitment to each other and the community.
Have a truly wonderful new year!
