General Questions
-
What is a strategic plan and how does it govern a school district?
A strategic plan is designed to communicate several key concepts that drive a district forward in achieving its vision. The content outlined in a strategic plan communicates areas of focus for schools and teams, as well as how progress towards goals is measured along the way.
-
How does the strategic plan impact my child's education?
The strategic plan will become the guiding resource for establishing priorities, allocating resources, and holding ourselves accountable to our mission of successfully preparing all students for their futures.
-
What are the common elements of a strategic plan, and what will KSD focus on in theirs?
Some common elements of a strategic plan are goals, objectives, strategies, and measures. In KSD we will be focusing on the objectives, strategies and measures as our goal areas are already in place.
- Objectives are focused statements connected to a goal and they describe the short-term outcomes to be fulfilled.
- Strategies are the methods by which communities/teams will achieve the objective; often composed of activities, projects, actions, and/or resources.
- Measures are the indicators of progress towards achieving a goal. They could use data related to implementation (like creating a new committee) or outcomes (like graduation rate).
-
What does it mean to update the strategic plan?
An update of the strategic plan infers that we will not be building a new strategic plan from the ground up and instead will carry forward our four previous goal areas. The update will focus on creating objectives, strategies, and measures within each goal that align with our current context and future needs.
-
As a community member, parent, etc. how can I get involved?
There are several ways to get involved with the Strategic Plan update. You can apply to be a member of a Planning Committee, join a Community Conversation, or send an email with questions or comments to StrategicPlan@kent.k12.wa.us.
-
What is the role of the steering committee?
The steering committee guides the overall planning process and is accountable for the outcomes.
-
What is the format for committee work?
Planning committees will be aligned to our four goal areas and comprised of KSD students, families, staff, and School Board members. Participants can expect to commit 30-90 minutes per week on planning activities, which will span a variety of topics and formats (virtual, in-person), from approximately February through May 2023.
