Kindergarten through 6^th Grade: Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

• Kindergarten: Referred students in kindergarten will complete the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) online between December 5-16, 2022
• Grades 1, 3, and 4: Referred students in Grades 1, 3, and 4 will complete the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) online between February 1-28, 2023
• Grades 2, 5, and 6: All students in Grades 2, 5 and 6 will complete the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) online between February 1-28, 2023

The CogAT assessment measures the student’s learned reasoning abilities, or aptitudes, in verbal analogies, number analogies, and figure matrices.

In addition to the CogAT, we will also review data for referred students from other assessments that are appropriate at their grade level.

Kindergarten through Grade 2

  • Reading i-Ready Benchmark Assessment
  • WAKIDs (Kindergarten only)

Grades 3-6

For Grades K-11

• Surveys 
  • We will consider input from teacher(s) and parent(s)/guardian(s) using rating scales.
• Multilingual Learners (ML)
  • Students with a first language other than English will also be evaluated for rapid language acquisition using the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA).
• Inclusive Education (IE) Students
  • Students who qualify for HiCap and also qualify for either inclusive education services or a 504 plan are often referred to as twice-exceptional students. It is important that staff from both programs collaborate when planning for students who are eligible for multiple services. Additional data available for students with IEPs may also be used in the identification process.

Grades 7-11:  Portfolio submission

• All referred students in grades 7-11 must submit a portfolio by March 31, 2023
  
  
• The portfolio must include the following four work samples:
  
  1. One English Language Arts (ELA) work sample which can include essays, book projects, cross-disciplinary work that shows deep analysis and/or application in Science and Social Studies.
  2. One math work sample that shows multiple pathways of solving problems at a higher level and deep reasoning abilities.
  3. One project that shows interdisciplinary work, and creativity.
  4. An explanation of leadership experience inside and/or outside of school and community initiatives.

*If a student is currently receiving MLE services, any of the above work samples may be submitted in a student’s home language. A translation service will be used in order to evaluate work samples not submitted in English.

• Each referred student will submit a portfolio reflecting the traditional thinking of a Highly Capable student. Return the completed portfolio to the HiCap department.
  • Please scan all portfolio documents and email them to KSDHiCap@kent.k12.wa.us or mail them to the HiCap office before March 31, 2023.
