  • Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

Welcome to Meridian’s 2020-2021 active year of learning. Although it is a very unusual opening for the school year, we know with our staff, our parents and guardians and our fantastic, eager to learn students, it is going to be an unprecedented but successful year of learning

We all believe that students learn best in an active, in-person environment with their friends, and in close proximity to a skilled and caring teacher; however, until this COVID-19 crisis passes, our highest priority must be keeping students, staff, and families healthy and safe. We ask for your help and patience as we navigate this new adventure for our students, our families, and our staff. As the popular saying goes: “We are all in this together.”

Meridian’s online learning is a mix of live instruction from teachers, specialists, our paraeducators, and all staff who are involved in your child’s school day activities. Students' live instruction will be completed by teachers in the morning; while student work time and teacher office time, will be held in the afternoons. Students will be assigned work to complete in the afternoon session. If questions arise, they can contact their teacher with their questions or concerns. Moving from the traditional educational model to remote learning can be a steep learning curve for many of our students. Setting aside time every day to go over your child’s classwork and his/her understanding of the programs that his/her class is using will be essential in helping prepare your child for success.

The extraordinary situation presented by distance learning and the COVID crisis make it especially important for our teachers to support the emotional and social wellbeing of our students. Each morning, each of our classrooms begin the day with a brief social/emotional introduction to encourage students to share how their life is going. We will do everything we can to support students who are feeling isolated, as well as those who are feeling frightened and confused by matters far outside of the student’s control. With the daily economic, racial and health concerns that students and families are being exposed to, we need to pay special attention to those who are most affected by these concerns.

There are numerous links to help you and your child navigate through their daily learning. KSD will be using Canvas eLearning. To get to the Canvas eLearning, go to Meridian’s home page and click on the Canvas link to the right of the page. If you run into technical difficulties with your child’s access or device, please reach out to our Customer Support Center at CustomerSupportCenter@kent.k12.wa.us.

For further student learning insights, go to Meridian’s Home Page, click on Teaching & Learning, then click on Frequently Used Links. You will find information on Microsoft Teams, Canvas, Clever, and many links to student resources.

Meridian Elementary is known as the “Meridian Community.”  WE are proud to be part of this community of caring and thoughtful neighbors who strive to help students to excel in life through their education, through caring, through self-respect, and through family commitment.

We look forward to the time when we can be back to a normal face-to-face school routine, but until that time, we will continue to teach your children and make this a very active year of learning.
